The Eighth Technical Conference of the American Society for Composites was held October 19–21, 1993, at the Marriott Airport Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio. The event was chaired by Dr. Golam M. Newaz of Battelle Memorial Institute and hosted in partnership with the Ohio Aerospace Institute. The location was especially fitting, given the strong regional presence of Wright Laboratories and NASA Lewis Research Center—two major institutions with long-standing commitments to composites research.
The 1993 conference featured 107 technical papers, covering a broad spectrum of topics including interfaces, processing, smart structures, thick composites, damage tolerance, mechanics, fatigue, fracture, and damage modeling. In addition, dedicated sessions were organized on metal matrix composites (MMC) and ceramic matrix composites (CMC), reinforcing the conference's role in advancing both traditional and emerging composite systems. With Cleveland’s proximity to major research institutions, the conference served as an ideal venue for showcasing national progress in composite science and engineering.
The Eighth ASC Technical Conference brought together a distinguished community of nationally and internationally recognized experts, committed researchers, and a strong contingent of student contributors. This diverse and engaged gathering created an exceptional environment for the exchange of technical knowledge, experience, and ideas across the composites field.
Dr. Golam M. Newaz, serving as General Chair, expressed deep appreciation to the authors for their high-quality contributions that made the conference a technical success. He also extended heartfelt thanks to session chairs, plenary participants, and members of the OAI Composites Focus Group—especially Professors Robert Sierakowski and James Whitney—for their leadership. In addition, he recognized Barbara Hager (ASC), Richard Ziegfield (OAI), and Carole Haenszel (Battelle) for their invaluable assistance in organizing and executing the complex logistics of the conference.
