Durability and Damage Tolerance

Purpose:
The Durability and Damage Tolerance Division (DDTD) brings together researchers and practitioners working to understand, prevent, predict, detect, mitigate, and repair damage in composite materials and structures, with the goal of improving their performance, reliability, and service life.

Areas of interest include:

  • Design and manufacturing for durability and damage tolerance.
  • Damage initiation, evolution, fracture, fatigue, and failure.
  • Impact and dynamic response of composite materials and structures.
  • Experimental and characterization methods for damage detection and assessment.
  • Computational, multiscale, and data-driven methods for damage prediction and prognosis.
  • Effects of manufacturing defects, material variability, and environmental conditions on durability.
  • Inspection, structural health monitoring, and nondestructive evaluation.
  • Damage mitigation, repair, and life-extension strategies.
  • Lifecycle, reliability, and economic assessment of damage.

Division Activities:
  • Solicit papers in the areas of durability and damage tolerance of composite materials and structures.
  • Evaluate papers nominated by DDTD session chairs and recommend outstanding contributions for the ASC Best Paper Award.
  • Host the annual division meeting during the ASC Technical Conference.
  • Facilitate discussions and solicit member input regarding emerging research areas and future conference session topics.
  • Promote collaboration among academia, industry, government agencies, and national laboratories through technical sessions, invited talks, and networking opportunities.
  • Encourage student and early-career researcher participation in division activities and technical leadership.
  • Promote DDTD activities and collaboration with other ASC Technical Divisions and relevant professional organizations, such as AIAA and ASME.
  • Promote year-round technical engagement through activities such as virtual seminars and invited talks.
